What is a taxidermist? Ethics, emotions, materials, and process.
Jazmine Miles-Long

Jazmine will discuss the materials and processes she uses to create her ’ethical’ taxidermy only using animals that have died from natural causes. She will also delve into what it is like to be a modern-day taxidermist. Through revealing the skilled processes involved in creating taxidermy, Jazmine aims to show how this often-misunderstood craft is not only useful for science and education, but also that it really can show the utter beauty of living things. A poignant reminder that life is fleeting and precious and that we need to work hard to protect it.

Fellows in Folly
Jane Dorner and Simon Hurst

The Guild was founded to form partnerships between architects and craftsmen and eccentricity was always a feature. Simon Hurst and Jane Dorner are continuing in that tradition, and the boundaries between architect and artist or between collaboration and friendship have pleasingly merged. Both are members of the Folly Fellowship having won the unique category of the Shed-of-the-Year Competition with the folly that Simon designed, and Jane decorated in 2022. They are now collaborating on a shell-house in Jane’s outside loo as well as on Simon’s book examining the purpose and meaning of architectural features that are not as they initially seem. Their illustrated talk will look at the notion of ‘folly’ and ‘fellowship’ in various senses of the words.
